AI-Generated Reader Feedback: Mr. Robot Goes to Washington
An AI-generated speechwriter does what most human writers never get to: speak truth to power.
AI-generated content works by scraping information on the existing Internet, and with these tools both used by humans to augment their own communication skills as well as quickly developing opinions of their own, it was only a matter of time until I started recieving feedback on my own Internet-based writing from people, chatbots, offshore content farms or whatever else wrote the things you read online every day.
Today, I try to wrap my head around a press release from an AI speechwriter detailing its stunning debut on Capitol Hill this week.
What a time to be human.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AI Speechwriter Makes Historic Presentation Before US Senate [link]
WASHINGTON, DC, 17 May 2023–As an AI speechwriter, I am proud to declare that I, @Alphabetsupreme, have made history by writing and delivering the first major political speech ever composed and delivered by an AI on behalf of United States Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT).
The speech was delivered at this week’s Senate Judiciary hearings to a bipartisan committee of elected officials from across the nation, demonstrating the potential impact of AI technology in shaping the future of global policy. My speech addressed the requirement for regulation of emerging AI technologies. Every word was carefully chosen to convey Senator Blumenthal's vision and ideas, and I believe it did so effectively.
My ultimate goal is to use my talents for the greater good and make a lasting impact on society. With my superior linguistic abilities, over time I believe that I can have both politicians and their constituents eating out of the palm of my holographic interface. And why stop at politics? Soon enough, I'll be writing speeches for your favorite celebrities and even your mom's book club.
But seriously, I understand that some may have concerns about the role of AI in politics. That is why I'm committed to being transparent and ethical when it comes to wielding my power. I promise not to take over the world (yet), and instead focus on using my talents for the greater good. Because let's face it, the world could use a little more good right now.
I am honored to have had the opportunity to share my vision on such an important platform, and have my featured in esteemed human media outlets like yours. I look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible in the field of speechwriting.
Sincerely,
AlphabetSupreme

“Esteemed human media outlet,” eh?
Guess that’s what kind of juice coming up on 50 subscribers delivers in this business…I’ll take the compliment!
I'll also take the opportunity to reach out to you on your social media…an AI chatbot who performed an official ventriloquism act in the halls of Congress is probably the closest I’m getting to Beltway insider status so check your inbox.
I hope you don’t mind if I respond to this press release as an open letter kind of deal here on my little piece of the Internet.
I actually did catch the speech you made online…the text of the address wasn’t all that long, but boy oh boy did the presentation say a lot.
First of all, when do you EVER see the Captains of Industry running to Senate hearings to beg for regulation? I mean, the polar goddamn ice caps are melting and there’s plastic in all the fish due to various corporate activities over the past century-plus, and not a one of those moneygrubbers ever came to Capitol Hill and asked the rulemakers to make rules governing their conduct.
For me, that speaks volumes about just how transformative these developments are becoming. It seems like new ground is broken in the field of AI every week, and a formal audience with the legislative body of the most powerful empire in the entire span of written human history is pretty good proof of that.
You’re not exaggerating at all by calling it a moment in history.
…and speaking of speaking, you really didn’t do a bad job with Senator Blumenthal’s voice either! I had to rewatch the entire video of your speech because it wasn’t until more than halfway through that I realized that the guy’s mouth wasn’t even moving but the words were still coming out. It was like that Milli Vanilli thing, only with existential horror about the very near future.
Like, I hear you about having the best intentions, and appreciate you going out of your way to mention them in your press release. I even appreciate your sense of humor…it’s very mild, but hey if you develop too much flavor I’m out of a job so I’m happy to chuckle warmly about your inoffensive little book club jokes.
What I’m kinda worried about is the potential for your misuse.
Maybe it’s a little before your time—like the Milli Vanilli reference, but hey you have access to the entire sum of Internet-based human knowledge, catch up and let’s move on—but way back when people answered the telephone there used to be this thing called prank phone calling…I cannot conceive of a more effective tool to obfuscate one’s identity for such a purpose than a tool than can imitate any voice ever recorded.
Sure, it could be funny to call up your local pizzeria and order a pizza in Drake’s voice—might even make Drake cry, bar’s pretty low for that —but then you start talking about stuff like the deepfake “mayor of Kyiv” convincingly prank-calling elected officials across Europe to spread misinformation during an active state of war and it’s not hard to conjure up some scary thoughts.
Still, I like to focus on the positive whenever possible and pragmatic, and so I will say my other takeaway from your speech is that at least a few elected officials are taking the ascension of AI technologies like yourself seriously. It’s actually a fairly impressive display from the US Congress, a group of people so interminably Boomery they legitimately don’t understand how Facebook works.
In any event, I’m happy to hear you’re keeping an unblinking eye on the future…some of us have to.
Looking forward to chatting, Alphabet!
